Just as computers will disappear, so should ICANN. My goal in participating
in ICANN is to encourage voices to speak out in favor of a fully automated
system which neither requires human policy intervention, nor permits it.
Perhaps it was necessary, at the beginning of the Internet, to manage scarce
hardware resources via naming policies, but this is obviously no longer a
problem. ICANN has demonstrated its complete mastery of secretive 19th
century parliamentary bureaucracy. It has not demonstrated any expertise
whatsoever in implementing an open, democratic, egalitarian future. This
entire mess would vanish if volunteers started *now* to design an automated
naming system which requires nothing more than basic IT administration, and
which takes no position in naming policies.
