I just had to comment:  I personally don't just want my phone to work -
I also want an equal right to call others on the phone. An aristocratic
telephone system might be one where only certain people have access to
certain "premium" calling privileges / numbers whatever.

In fact, one might argue that in order to consider the telephone to
"work", it MUST be democratic.
