Folks,
This is a very personal comment, so please take it for whatever you think
its worth.
To me, the highest honour, is to be an 'Internet Volunteer'
What we think of the Internet today, is thanks to the many unsung volunteers
who have contributed their time, energy and effort ( often at bizarre times
of the day) to get this little miracle going.
Perhaps pursuing some private goal or proving a private point, but also
perhaps, believing in doing something for the greater good... working for
something larger, and better than themselves.
Improving it *and* letting it go -- allowing it to evolve as those after us
desire.
I had lunch with a editor friend of mine (yes ... it's true... you can be
friends with newspaper folk).
Anyway, we were talking about ICANN ... shooting the breeze and he was
listening to me complain etc.
To cut a long story short, he said that helping to bring the Internet to
Hong Kong, contributing first to our local internet community in the region
and then getting sucked into ICANN ;) ... well ... "this is your World War
II".
It's good to have been born in these times ... the opportunity and the
responsibility are both enormous.
So, let's try to contribute above and beyond what you can image of yourself,
and help make the At Large represent the best the Internet has to offer.
