We have to remember that ICANN is a corporation. And being on the board
is quite a different thing than being elected to a public office. A
Director is legally obligated towards the corporation and must look for
the best interests of the corporation (the definition of "best interests"
is rather soft and fuzzy.) This means that someone who is elected can't
look to serve only those who elected him or her; the perspective must be
more synoptic. (There is no denying, of course, that where one comes from
tends to affect or color what one perceives as the "best interests" of
the corporation.)
This is a subtle point, but anyone who wants to join me on the board ought
to be very careful to understand the actual nature of the position and the
limitations, and powers, that come with it.
