Establishing a proposed ICANN "At-Large Supporting Organization"

(Follow-up email sent to organizations that responded to the ALSC's solicitation)

Thank you for expressing an interest in the creation of an At-Large Supporting Organization (ALSO) within ICANN. To help address the question of how much interest there is in creating a global organization to enable individuals to participate and be represented in ICANN, the At-Large Study Committee (ALSC) would like some more information about your organization. We will be using this information in a report to the Board on the level and nature of initial interest expressed by organizations that contacted the ALSC.

Please send us an email with the following information (to comments@atlargestudy.org). It would be most helpful to receive this information by February 18.

  • Full name, address, phone and "governing" officials for your organization.
  • Where your organization is headquartered and the countries (or cities) in which your organization has entities (if applicable).
  • The mission or primary activities in which your organization engages and how they relate to ICANN's mission.
  • What comprises your organization? Does your organization have individual members? If so, how many?

Given that ICANN's Board has not yet decided whether an At-Large organization will be established and what its parameters will be, we are not, at this time, able to provide you with organizational or financial details or specific information on how your organization might participate. We would like to follow-up, however, on the various options we initially presented and get more information on what type of help or involvement your organization is interested in exploring.

  • Outreach to individual Internet users - Would your organization consider distributing to its membership information on an At-Large organization's activities and how to become an At-Large member?
  • Conferring At-Large membership on interested members of your organization - Would your organization consider participating in a process to authenticate the identity of individuals who belong to your organization so that they may also register for At-Large membership? This might entail providing information on your organization's own registration process and validating information about individual members. Would your organization be interested in directly offering ALSO membership to individuals who join your organization?
  • Starting a "founders group" to help establish a regional and/or global ALSO structure - Would your organization consider participating in international and/or regional meetings and expend staff and financial resources on organizing a global and/or regional At-Large organization to serve as a framework for outreach, education, and decision-making on Internet user/consumer issues that fall within ICANN's specific technical and administrative mission?
  • Other activities - Please share any additional activities that your organization may be interested in undertaking.

Thank you for your continued assistance. We will keep you apprised of our progress and recommendations concerning an At-Large organization in ICANN. Additional information on our activities and ICANN can be found at www.atlargestudy.org.

The At-Large Study Committee: Carl Bildt (Chair), Chuck Costello (Vice Chair), Pierre Dandjinou, Esther Dyson, Olivier Iteanu, Ching-Yi Liu, Thomas Niles, Oscar Robles, and Pindar Wong (Vice Chair).
